About
Whispers in Akarra
Akarra was built between 2001 and 2005 by Jens Bergensten and a small team around him. A 2D fantasy MMORPG with a hand-drawn world, a five-colour soul system and a skill tree made of gem sockets. The servers went quiet in 2005.
History
How it went
-
2001–2003
The pre-alphas
Akarra grows in public, one numbered release at a time. Fellowships arrive first, then items and loot, trading, lighting, quests, shops, day and night, and finally skills, gems and player killing.
-
2003–2004
Alpha 1
Darkness, torches and lights. Ranged weapons. The cleric class. Clans, and a much bigger world. The last content the game ever received is dated February 2004.
-
July 2005
The public release
The official servers are gone. The team releases the game so fans can run their own servers: "released to allow fans to play again on their own servers, and perhaps build their own worlds."
-
February 2008
The source goes public
The server source is released under a licence that allows anyone to use it, on one condition: credit.
Now
And then it came back
The 2008 release is why the game is playable again. The world, the art, the monsters, the items and the maths are the originals, rebuilt to run in a browser instead of on a Windows machine with a 2001 graphics card. There is no music, because there never was any. There is no shop, no subscription and nothing to buy. One server, one world, free.
