What's in the game

A proper old MMORPG. Stats you can read, loot with numbers on it, and a world you cross on foot.

The world

One map, no loading screens

Four thousand areas of forest, road, coast, farmland and town, with two cave systems underneath. You walk between all of it. Nothing is instanced and nothing loads.

A full day and night passes every three hours. After dusk the woods go properly black — light comes from the sky, from torches, and from whatever else is glowing, and walls stop it the same way they stop you seeing.

The same forest scene at midnight, lit only by a warm pool of torchlight around the character.
Midnight. Bring a torch.

The caves. Dark, unmapped, and where most of the trouble lives.

Your character

Five numbers that decide everything

Strength, Constitution, Agility, Intelligence, Faith. Health, mana, stamina, accuracy, damage, armour and five resistances all come out of them. Five points to spend every level, up to level 100; three after that; none past 125. The cap is 250 and nobody has been near it.

You also pick a soul colour at creation — white, red, green, blue or yellow. It makes you tougher against that colour of damage, and you are stuck with it.

Skills

Gems in sockets

The circular skill panel with coloured gem sockets connected in a branching tree.
Skills are sockets. Gems are the build.

You learn a skill from a scroll. Related skills merge into one entry with up to fifty sockets across five rows.

Gems fill the sockets: one every level, two every fifth, in the five soul colours. Each socket wants a particular colour, and every gem you place makes the next one harder to earn. Cast a spell and that skill locks for five minutes — no swapping gems mid-fight.

Fighting

Rolls you can follow

Your accuracy against their armour, then damage between your minimum and maximum, minus whatever their armour soaks. Five damage colours, five resistances, and a bonus against your own colour.

Let your stamina hit zero and your accuracy, damage and armour all halve until you rest. Ranged weapons lose bite with distance.

Dying never costs experience. It costs coins, and if you have been killing other players it costs a piece of your gear as well.

Loot

464 items, and none of them break

Fourteen kinds of thing across ten equipment slots, each with requirements that are checked while you wear it. Outgrow a set of armour and it stays on your back doing nothing.

Nothing wears out and nothing needs repairing. Torches and mounts burn down, but only while you are moving. Coins come in copper, silver and gold, and how much you can carry depends on your level.

People and quests

Everyone in town wants something

Alera the Herbalist wants a word.

Thirty-two people with real conversations — branching, and they notice what you are carrying, what you have done and how much coin is in your pocket. The same people run the shops, do the crafting and hold your spare gear.

Forty-five quests, up to six objectives each. Kill a number of something, wipe out a den, reach somewhere, escort someone there, use the right thing in the right place — or beat a clock, and lose the quest when it runs out.

Other players

Fellowships, guilds and the rest

Fellowships

Up to ten of you. The experience pool grows with the group instead of splitting thin, and if you cover all five soul colours between you it grows again.

Guilds

Five people in one fellowship and thirty gold between them. All five start as owners. Guilds gain standing from what their members earn, and the top ones pay everybody a bonus.

Player killing

Free in a PvP area. Outside one you both need level 15, and killing someone who did not start it puts you on their list for ten hours — where everyone can see it, and where every death costs you a piece of gear.
